An Oak Tree was first shown in an exhibition of Craig-Martin's work at the Rowan Gallery, off Bond Street, London, in 1974. Many visitors assumed that Craig-Martin was playing the ultimate con trick, as there seemed no evidence of work on display in the white-walled gallery. However, high up on a wall was the glass of water and the glass shelf of the work An Oak Tree. At this time the accompanying text was available as a leaflet.
The original was purchased by the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra in 1977; an artist's copy is on loan to the Tate gallery in London from a private collection.
Craig-Martin said, "An Oak Tree has had a great life as an artwork. It is nearly always on view somewhere, and has been shown all over the world—the text has been translated into at least 20 languages. The only place it has never been shown is in the US."
It was once barred by Australian officials from entering the country as "vegetation". Craig-Martin was forced to inform them that it was really a glass of water. He said, "It was of course a wonderfully funny incident, particularly because it extended into 'real life' the discussion about belief and doubt, and fact and fiction I was addressing in the work."

Following the success of Sunday Feb27th, 2011's "Here and There and Here" at Artscape Gibraltar Point, The YoGuy Team is getting ready for itssister event of similar titling at Kensington Market's: Double Double Land (DDL) on March 27th, 2011. This time, 17 artists from 10 different cities will approach this 'coming together' in a curatorial re-contextualization that acts as an exploration of space and time; that their visions will bring forth a quest and adventure in the liminal, the mystical and the absurd. From ways of seeing, ways of experiencing and ways of escaping, each time-based work eclectically forms the nature of this special event.
Featured in the program are 2 live performances, by DDL artists, and 20 videos from visual artists; local and abroad. All artists in this show know that their context is the hosting space, while the videos approach this context through means of tone and mood, the performers use their intimate relationship with DDL to create thematic and haunting visual manifestations that reinforce the experience. They will act as anchors that stabilize and reflect the atmosphere of the event. As a curatorial experiment, “Here and There and Here/There and Here and There” explores ways of viewing that are not relying on the superficial but on the undercurrents of feeling and emotion.

Jon McCurley and i have started a new blog called "Yo Guy" and we need you to submit your performance videos and/or images. We want to start a really great community but we need your submissions in order for that to work!
all you have to do is email our contact address and at the end of every week we will update the blog. We also plan on having an annual exhibition of video and performance that will only contain selections from the blog. So, the more you submit... the more likely we will include you!
